Halloween Is For Kids, Not Detectives
I knew what time of year it was without looking at the calendar. All I had to do was look into the glazed and mischievous eyes of one of my detectives and the annoyed and dreadful eyes of his partner. It must be fall, and the onslaught of holiday enthusiasm would plague us for the next three months. Don't get me wrong, I love the holiday season but this one zealot takes things a little too far sometimes….most of the time.
I listened to the zealot as he harassed his partner about costumes, horror movie marathons, decorations, anything that had to do with Halloween as his poor partner just sat there and occasionally shrugged his shoulders at the man's persistence. Getting only indifference from his partner made the man more determined to goad his partner more. He made sure everyone in the office knew of his super secret costume and how it would blow all others away at the Halloween Bash that their friend Huggy was hosting at his local establishment. This went on for weeks and the blond detective never rose to the bait, but I could almost see the wheels turning in his head and every once in a while I would catch the gleam deep in his eyes. Yes, he was up to something and was keeping it very close to him. I knew it must be a doozey because he was playing it so cool. I've been around the pair long enough to know that he had something very big of his own planned for his exuberant partner.
He never let on as to what he had in store but I received the evidence a couple of days after the party. I walked into my office to find an envelope lying on my desk with the scribbled handwriting of one Huggy Bear. Huggy and I have had our differences but he is a generally good guy and my detectives trust and respect him so that is good enough for me. As I picked up the envelope, I questioned whether I really wanted to know what was inside. But curiosity got the best of me and I took a peek. I pulled out an 8 x 10 color photograph. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing so hard. Starsky's super secret costume was exposed in the picture as was the scheme that Hutch had planned for his partner.
It is truly amazing how connected and close these two are; both so secretive, yet on the same wavelength. The picture showed the two side by side, arm in arm in front of the bar. Hutch a carbon copy of Starsky and Starsky a carbon copy of Hutch. Only these two would think of dressing as each other. People are always getting them confused and this is not going to help the matter. I chuckled again as I picked up the phone and called Edith. "You will never believe what those two have done now. I'll show you when I get home for dinner. I love you too; see you in a little bit." One month down and two to go, how are we going to put with him?
